Castr MPEG DASH Player Features

What is MPEG-DASH?

MPEG-DASH is the adaptive bit-rate HTTP-based streaming solution. DASH stands for “Dynamic Adaptive Streaming over HTTP.”
Because it is based on HTTP, any origin server can be set up to serve MPEG-DASH streams. With MPEG-DASH,
videos can be streamed at different quality levels and switched smoothly between them.

How to use MPEG-DASH player to test stream?

Simply enter the URL of your mpeg-dash stream (.mpd file) into Castr’s Dash player and press play. If everything goes well, the video will playback smoothly.

Make sure your URL are HTTPS- compatible, otherwise your stream may not play. Make sure CORS is enabled on streaming server when using MPEG-DASH streams.

  • What is the difference between MPEG-DASH and HLS?

    Hover

The major difference between HLS and DASH is that the former can be used with any codec, while latter only supports a specific type of video encoding. In addition to this difference in supported formats there's also how they're governed: Apple has tightly controlled content for its own proprietary protocol which makes it less open than other standards.

  • Why should you do video streaming test?

    Hover

It is crucial to test your stream before you go live. This will help avoid any hidden issues that can only be identified when it's running in real time, and also make sure everything runs smoothly on the day.

  • What is MPEG-DASH period?

    Hover

Periods, contained in the top-level MPD element, describe a part of the content with a start time and duration. By default, all manifest is contained in one period but it can split into multiple periods to separate ads from main content.
